1. Click an empty cell. and then type an equal sign (=) to start the formula.
2. Next to the equal sign Type a few numbers and separate them with a minus sign (-)

3. Press ENTER for Windows or RETURN for MAC
Subtracting numbers using cell references
Cell references combine column letters and row numbers, such as A1 or F3,4,5, when you use cell references in formulas instead of cell values. You can change the value without changing the formula
. 1. Type a single number in cells C1 and D1
. For example, 5 and 3
2. In cell E1, type an equal sign (=) to start the formula
. 3. Next to the equal sign, type C1-D1
. 4. Press ENTER for Windows or RETURN for MAC, the result will be displayed
If you use the numbers in the example, the result is 2
Note:
If you change the value in cell C1 or D1 and then press ENTER for Windows or RETURN. For MAC, the value of E1 will change. Even if you didn't change the formula
If you see the date instead of the result you want, select the cell and on the Home select General
